1. Origin of Villa Sarchi Coffee Varieties
Villa Sarchi, also known as La Luisa or Villalobos Bourbon, is a natural mutation of the Bourbon coffee variety. This variety features a single gene mutation that causes a smaller plant size, earning it the nickname "dwarf mutation." Like Caturra and Pacas, Villa Sarchi has distinct and valuable traits.
Discovered in Costa Rica’s Alajuela province, in the northwestern region, during the 1950s or 1960s, Villa Sarchi thrived in the region’s ideal coffee-growing climate. Following its discovery, selective breeding in Costa Rica enhanced its desirable traits over generations. In 1974, Villa Sarchi was introduced to Honduras by IHCAFE, though it remained primarily cultivated in Costa Rica. The variety gained wider recognition when Sarchimor, a disease-resistant hybrid involving Villa Sarchi, was developed.'

It thrives in well-drained, nutrient-rich soils within tropical to subtropical climates. Its strong rooting system requires deep soil and sufficient space for growth. A planting density of about 3,500 plants per hectare is recommended, making Villa Sarchi suitable for areas with limited space.
Germinating Villa Sarchi Coffee Seeds
Farmers prepare Villa Sarchi seeds by cleaning and soaking them overnight before planting in well-draining sandy soil. A thin layer of sand or gravel is added on top to retain warmth, with an optimal temperature range of 20-25°C. Seeds typically germinate within 2-6 months or longer. Once sprouted, seedlings are transferred to larger containers with a nutrient-rich, moist, and well-aerated environment.
